Roddy Ando. I'm a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser. I have been an interim for more than 25 years. There is no reason why an interim should be discriminated on age grounds, as they are only going to be with an organization for a short period of time. That is the purpose of an interm, they are not a full time hire, but there to hold the fort for a specific reason. I did some volunteering in Kenya this spring, which was great and I was please to put something back, but I would prefer a paid role. However, what really gets me is the principle. Why are highly experienced individuals discriminated against because the are experienced? If you read the accounting advertisements, they often refer to "newly and recently qualified". In the context of interim work, that is absurd. What the newly and recently accountants need is a stable job. For interim roles one can have periods of not working, that suits the older and more experienced accountants! I speak Italian, French and Spanish (as well as English). The 2000s were great for international work, alot based on the Sarbanes Oxley requirements, but I also had a number of clients who did mergers, acquisitions and disposal throughout Europe. What I really enjoy is a good overseas assignment - I have worked throughout Europe, but also is Pakistan, Kazakhstan and throughout Africa. I really want to understand why years of experience are ignored by recruiters?

Hi Ad, We worked together many moons ago. My last perm role finished when I moved back to the UK from Asia in early 2020. I started looking for something to do once the kids were back in a classroom but didn’t get any interviews. I have been doing a part time role for a start-up since 2022 which is v interesting and for the moment keeping me busy but keen to be part of the network to help address the ‘early retirement’ issue.

Hi Ad, Peter Egner here. I have been an interim for over 25 years, so I have no relevant recent experience of looking for a perm role. I do think things are different for interims though. I have found that the clients I have spoken to, or worked with, have valued two key things: 1. Experience - they have been looking for someone who has been there, done that and is not phased by the task ahead. This does not necessarily mean they wanted someone older or younger, they just wanted someone who had the specific experience/expertise in that topic 2. An ability to cut through, get on and deliver the required outcome. Touch wood, age has never come into it. I do appreciate that other people may have had different experiences from me.

Hi Everyone
Sheri here. I've been doing HR Interim and HR Consultant roles since 2008. We all know age discrimination is illegal but it still happens, they just need to see your qualifications or how far back your work history goes to figure out one's age.
When I first dipped my toe in the job market at the end of 2007, it was clear that my age stood against me for perm roles but was a definite advantage for Interim roles, where experience was sought as a key requirement. At the time I was approaching my 50s and it continued to be an advantage until this year.
Right now, I can't be certain whether it's my age or rate of pay that's causing me difficulties securing a contract or whether the General Election made all sectors put their projects or Interim requirements on hold until after the new government took office. For this reason, I found Ad's post of interest to see what others were currently experiencing.

Thanks for posting Sheri. Welcome to the world of 'good old-fashioned forums'. I realise this is hardly 'Tik-Tok' generation, but we aren't that so it's fine.
Hello Bernard Gore . Saw you wander in. There's not much here yet. but step #1 is to attract some like-minded folks.
Hello derek101 and grahamt. Saw you wandering in. Any questions and please say hello if you want to.

Derek Walker. Pharmaceutical Sales/Commercial/Management 30+ years and worked with Ad previously. A redundancy just before covid upset the apple cart a bit derailing where I was planning my future. Few challenging years, one super challenging awful role, and I am working independently with a couple of Pharma companies in an advisory/contact commercial positions. Different but enjoyable. Looking forward to hearing the chat and opinions here! Cheers D

Hi, Bernard here. Like some others here, in addition to the challenges of reaching 3-score, I've recently moved back to the UK after a couple of decades working on the other side of the world. I've got experience in permanent, interim and other contractor working. I quickly discovered that I wasn't likely to get a role at the level (and pay) I'd reached previously, and had to somewhat revise my expectations. Luckily I've found a niche in the Higher Education sector which seems quite buoyant, and less judgemental about age and lack of recent UK experience.

Hi Ad, Didier Bloch here.
I am a cybersecurity professional, a CISO with hands on experience. My last full time employment ended 2 years ago when FTX bought the company and went belly up. I have done some consulting since, but I really would like a full time job. I have the experience, the certifications, the motivation, the energy (CrossFit 4 times a week), speak French and Italian but my age is keeping me from getting a job.
I would love to hear what others have done to handle ageism.
Good luck to all!
Didier
